Annamarie Beckel initially pursued a career in ecology at Miami University of Ohio and at the University of Minnesota. She made her first trip to Newfoundland in 1976 while conducting doctoral research on river otters. Beckel began working as a science writer for the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1979, and in 1990, began writing and publishing a monthly newsletter for an alcohol abuse prevention program on the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe Indian reservation in Wisconsin. She worked on the reservation until September 2004 when she moved to St John's.

When Beckel turned to writing fiction in 1993, the story of William Cormack and Shawnawdithit came strongly to mind, and she retold that story in the novel, All Gone Widdun, published by Breakwater Books in 1999. In April 2005 Breakwater Books will publish Dancing in the Palm of His Hand, Beckel's novel about the witch persecutions in Europe. Flight of Ravens, a novel about Queen Boudica's rebellion against the Romans, is currently being marketed by a literary agent. Beckel is working on her fourth novel.
