Alison Dyer was born in the New Forest, England, grew up in Quebec and, for many years, has called Newfoundland home. She holds a M.Sc in physical geography from Memorial University and has a professional background in both the natural sciences and cultural industries.

Dyer is an independent journalist, contributing to over 30 magazines and newspapers in North America on topics ranging from environmental issues and sustainable living to business and travel. She also works as a technical writer, researcher and semi-professional photographer. In addition to journalism, Dyer writes poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction.

Dyer lives in St John's and Hant's Harbour with her two children. When not writing, she divides her time between helping facilitate the growth of the provincial organic agricultural industry, growing her own veggies, and kayaking the wild coast of Newfoundland.
