Martha Hickman Hild has been in Newfoundland since 2008, bringing more than 35 years' experience in writing and publishing. She spent her childhood in the state of Delaware, has a B.A. (Honors) from Oberlin College, Ohio, and a Ph.D. from the University of Leeds, England. Formally trained as a geologist, her earliest publications (1972-1985) were peer-reviewed articles in internationally circulated academic journals. Subsequently she turned to freelance technical writing and editing (1986-1995). During this time she authored numerous technical manuals, white papers, instructional aids and multimedia presentations for customers in academia, corporate IT, manufacturing and government. Her freelance work eventually led to employment within the publishing industry (1996-2007), first in educational publishing and then newspapers. At the Mazer Corporation, at the time one of North America's largest educational publishing services companies, she worked on a wide variety of large-scale publishing projects including textbook series for major educational publishers such as Harcourt, Pearson and McGraw Hill. Later at Cox Newspapers, as a news researcher she contributed to several award-winning stories. In 2003 as part of an investigative reporting team she was a finalist for the Harvard Kennedy School’s Goldsmith Prize, one of the newspaper industry's most prestigious awards. In addition to her writing and editing, she has worked extensively as a process analyst to help publishing teams improve and document their operations and standards. As well, she has experience building and using databases of information for complex research. For fun, she is working on a novel about time keeping. |
