WANL: Manuscript Evaluation Service

Manuscript Evaluation Service available to members

Do you have a short story - or novel, novella, memoir, article, suite of poems - that you feel has promise, but just can't seem to get accepted for publication? Or a manuscript that has undergone numerous re-writes and is now at the point where you'd like to have an experienced, established writer assess it?

WANL's Manuscript Evaluation Service may be of help.

This program is designed for writers at all levels who are interested in having their manuscript evaluated by a qualified writer and who are willing to hear constructive criticism. It can be particularly valuable for writers living in rural areas where access to workshops and other literary opportunities is limited.

The Writers' Alliance is pleased to be able to offer this service at a reasonable rate to members. We match manuscripts with editors, who are paid $100 for the first 10 pages plus $1.50 per page thereafter. The Writers' Alliance and author split the cost of the evaluation. For example, the total cost for a 200-page manuscript is $100 + (190 x $1.50) = $385. WANL covers 50% of the cost, making the cost to the writer $192.50.

This service provides you with an evaluation that includes:
  • Comments on content: characterization, dialogue, setting, structure, believability, research
  • Comments on writing technique: including technical ability, style, voice
  • Steps to take to develop the manuscript
  • Responses to three questions submitted by the author
This service is available on a first-come, first-serve basis, exlusively for members of the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador. All genres, and manuscripts of any length from a short story to a full-length novel, are welcome. Please note that participation in this program does not guarantee publication. Hand-written manuscripts will not be accepted.
The Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador gratefully acknowledges the financial support of
the Canada Council for the Arts, the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the City of St. John's.
