MetroVerse is launched on Metrobus

Ride the bus. Read the poems. Be transported!

What do patchy quilts, outlaws and crow feathers have in common? They are all featured in the new installment of poetry on the buses!

Beginning this week, passengers on Metrobus, the St John's area transit authority, will be treated to 16 new poems, thanks to the third installment of MetroVerse, a project funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and supported locally by Metrobus, the City of St John's, and the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador.

This installment of MetroVerse will showcase the work of 16 Newfoundland and Labrador poets, including Percy Janes, Des Walsh, Alison Pick and Boyd Chubbs. Poems were selected for their literary excellence by the MetroVerse Committee. The Canada Council for the Arts has sponsored similar Poetry on the Buses in cities across the country. Thousands of riders will have an opportunity to read the poems each day, giving unprecedented exposure to the participating poets and making a ride on a city bus even more transporting.

MetroVerse will be officially launched Tuesday, October 4th, 2005. The Mayor and Members of Council invite the public to a reception in honour of MetroVerse and the Canada Council for the Arts at the Foran-Greene Room at City Hall at 4:00pm. Poets Joan Sullivan, Kevin Hehir, Monica Kidd and Tom Henihan will read their featured poems and copies of the 16 new posters will be available for viewing. This event is free and open to the public. The Board of the Canada Council for the Arts, chaired by Karen Kain, artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada, will be visiting St John's from October 2nd to the 5th for a series of meetings and activities involving the arts community as well as the municipal and provincial governments. The Council's Board last met in St John's in 1997.

Poets whose work will be featured through MetroVerse: Percy Janes, Tom Henihan, Joan Sullivan, Alison Pick, Monica Kidd, Des Walsh, David Benson, Boyd Chubbs, Kevin Hehir, Sue Sinclair, Mina M Brown, Robert Hayman, Robert Pearce, Chief Misel Joe, Alastair Macdonald and Margaret Rehner.
