Fresh Fish Award for Emerging Writers nets a whopping 37 submissions

A lucrative new annual award sponsored by Newfoundland-born author Brian O'Dea and administered by the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador has uncovered a wealth of fresh talent. The Fresh Fish Award is geared towards unpublished writers with a book-length manuscript in any genre.

A total of 37 submissions were received by the June 23rd deadline and comprised 22 novels, eight poetry collections, six non-fiction submissions and one short story collection. The judges have been selected. A shortlist of three will be released September 15th, 2006 and the winner on October 21st, 2006 at the Writers' Alliance annual general meeting and conference banquet.

The winner will receive a cash prize of $4,000 in addition to $1,000 towards the professional editing of the winning manuscript as well as a miniature sculpture in the style of "Man Nailed to a Fish" by sculptor Jim Maunder.

"Holy mackerel," said Brian O'Dea. "I am not the least bit surprised, however, as I have always felt that one of our strongest attributes as Newfoundlanders is storytelling...whether that be in the longform, shortform, poemform, trueform, fictionform, or inbetweenform. We just love a good story, either to be the recipient of it, or the teller thereof. I couldn't be more pleased at the response, and I appreciate the Writers' Alliance's hard work in bringing this to fruition."
