Call for submissions from emerging writers in Newfoundland and Labrador for new literary award

The Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador is now calling for submissions to one of the country's most lucrative literary awards for unpublished writers. Dubbed the Fresh Fish Award for Emerging Writers by its sponsor, Brian O'Dea, the prize is valued at $5,000. The closing date for entries is 4:00pm on May 15th, 2006. The winner will be announced at the Alliance's annual general meeting in October 2006.

Wade Kearley, chair of the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador's (WANL) Literary Awards Committee, issued the call for submissions today. "Catching the attention of an agent and publisher is very difficult for an unpublished writer. This award can help an emerging writer break through that publishing barrier," said Mr Kearley. "The annual Fresh Fish award will help advance the best emerging writers in the province by providing significant financial support and public recognition."

A three-person jury will select the winning manuscript from all eligible entries. The winning author will receive a cash prize of $4,000 plus the editing services of a professional editor valued at up to $1,000. The winning author will also have her or his name inscribed on a brass plaque and receive a miniature sculpture in the style of "Man Nailed to a Fish" by sculptor Jim Maunder.

While the object of the award is to be as inclusive as possible, Mr Kearley said that anyone who intends to enter should pay careful attention to the rules of eligibility.

To be eligible to enter the Fresh Fish Award competition, writers must be registered members of WANL with a completed unpublished manuscript in any genre. (Individuals may register at the time of submission. Contact WANL for details.)

To be eligible writers must also have lived in Newfoundland and Labrador for 36 of the last 60 months.

Each book length manuscript for the Fresh Fish Award must be submitted in triplicate. Pages should be numbered, double spaced (except poetry) and can be copied double sided. The author's name should appear only on the title page. Those who wish to have the manuscript returned must submit a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage. All other manuscripts will be shredded.

Entries postmarked no later than May 15th, 2006 may be sent to The Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador, PO Box 2681, St John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, A1C 6K1 or hand delivered during regular business hours to 155 Water Street, St John's, no later than 4:00pm on May 15th, 2006.

The Fresh Fish Award for Emerging Writers is administered by the Writers' Alliance under the auspices of the Literary Arts Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, a registered charity dedicated to the development and appreciation of the literary arts in the province.
