Writers' Alliance to honour five Newfoundland and Labrador authors

St John's, NL: To help mark its 20th anniversary, the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador (WANL) is bestowing Lifetime Membership on five well-known local writers. Joan Clark, Tom Dawe, Bernice Morgan, Patrick O'Flaherty, and Helen Porter will receive their awards during WANL's Annual General Meeting at the Masonic Temple on October 6. Lifetime Membership may be awarded to writers whom the Alliance deems have made a major contribution to Newfoundland and Labrador literature over a significant period of time.

All five writers are widely published and cover a variety of genres. Joan Clark has written novels, story collections, and children's books and has been nominated for a Governor General's award for fiction. She has also been active in the Writers' Union of Canada. Her most recent book is the novel, An Audience of Chairs.

Tom Dawe, who taught for many years at Memorial University, is widely regarded as one of the province's best poets. He was a founding editor of the literary magazine Tickleace and has also written books for children. His most recent poetry collection is In Hardy Country.

Bernice Morgan, who is widely known for her novels Random Passage and Waiting for Time, was a founding member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Writers' Guild. She has recently released a new novel, Cloud of Bone.

Patrick O'Flaherty, who also taught at MUN, has published novels and story collections, and is highly regarded for his historical and scholarly writing and research. His most recent book is Lost Country: The Rise and Fall of Newfoundland, 1843-1943.

Helen Porter, another founding member of the Writers' Guild, has been publishing since the 1960s. She is well known as a mentor for young writers and has also been active in the Writers' Union of Canada. Her most recent book is the novel, Finishing School.
