Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland & Labrador Announces Finalists for the 2007 Newfoundland and Labrador Book Awards

St John's, NL: The Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador today announced the short lists for the 2007 Newfoundland and Labrador Book Awards. First presented in 1997, this year's awards honour artistic excellence in literature in the categories of non-fiction, sponsored by Rogers Cable, and poetry, sponsored by Kathy LeGrow.

Rogers Cable Non-fiction Award Short List:
  • Gerhard P Bassler for Vikings to U-Boats: The German Experience in Newfoundland and Labrador, McGill-Queen's University Press, 2006
  • Peter Hart for Mick: The Real Michael Collins, Viking Press, 2005
  • Frederick H White for Memoirs and Madness: Leonid Andreev through the Prism of the Literary Portrait, McGill-Queen's University Press, 2006
E J Pratt Poetry Award Short List:
  • Mary Dalton for Red Ledger, Véhicule Press, 2006
  • Stan Dragland for Stormy Weather: Foursomes, Pedlar Press, 2005
  • Patrick Warner for There, there, Véhicule Press, 2005
The winners will be announced on Tuesday, May 15, at an awards presentation at Government House.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Book Awards are administered by the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador under the distinguished patronage of the Honourable Edward Roberts, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. They are financed by corporate and private sponsors. The winner in each category receives a cash prize of $1,500 and each runner-up receives $500.

This is the 11th consecutive year for the awards, which consider books released in the two years previous. In alternate years, fiction and children's literature are recognized.
