Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador hosts emergency fundraising dinnerMarch 5, 2008–St John's, NL: The Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador (WANL) will host a fundraising dinner at The Ship Pub in Solomon's Lane for the Cultural Assistance Plan for Emergencies (CAPE) on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th, at 7 PM.The three course Thai dinner will also feature readings by acclaimed authors Michael Crummey and Carmelita McGrath. Tickets are $35 dollars a plate (beverages not included). CAPE is an emergency fund for cultural workers who are experiencing financial need arising from severe illness (either their own or that of their immediate family members), accident resulting in inability to work, or other catastrophic incident. It is administered by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC). "This has been a hard year for the arts community in terms of illnesses," says current WANL President Mark Callanan. "There's been a great need for the fund–so much so that it has been depleted. We're really hoping to pour money back into it." Callanan himself recently recovered from a life-threatening illness and benefited from the fund. "Workers in the cultural industry–artists, writers, musicians and others–often don't have the same safety net as those employed in other sectors. Many of us work on a contractual basis, so if we can't work, we aren't bringing any money in. I'm grateful that the CAPE fund was there when I needed it and I'd like to ensure it stays there for the benefit of other cultural workers." Tickets are available at The Ship Pub.
