Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland & Labrador Announces Finalists for the 2008 Newfoundland and Labrador Book AwardsMay 9, 2008–St John's, NL: The Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador today announced the finalists for the 2008 Newfoundland and Labrador Book Awards, which are co-sponsored by the Literary Arts Foundation of NL. First presented in 1997, this year's awards honour artistic excellence in literature in the categories of fiction, sponsored by Downhome Inc., and children's/young adult literature, sponsored by the Bruneau Family.Finalists are determined by independent judges. The short-listed writers and their books are:
The public is invited to hear the finalists read from their nominated works on May 25, 2 p.m., at The Studio, 272 Water Street, above Auntie Crae's. The Newfoundland and Labrador Book Awards are administered by the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Literary Arts Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador under the distinguished patronage of The Honourable John C. Crosbie, PC, OC, ONL, QC, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. They are financed by corporate and private sponsors. The winner in each category receives a cash prize of $1,500 and each runner-up will receive $500. This is the twelfth consecutive year for the awards, which consider books released in the two years previous. In alternate years, non-fiction and poetry are recognized.
