Winston Newbury was born and grew up in King’s Point, Green Bay, Newfoundland. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Education) degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, he taught one year in the academic system and two years in a vocational school. Upon earning a Master of Arts (Industrial Education) degree from the University of Minnesota, U.S.A; courses from Queen’s University; New Brunswick Technical College; and Dunwoody Industrial Institute, U.S.A; he became Training Supervisor, Bowater Newfoundland Limited, Corner Brook. He soon realized his calling was teaching and became an Instructor, College of the North Atlantic, Corner Brook. He served as Executive Secretary, Task Force on Integration of Academic and Vocational Education, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Assistant Co-ordinator, Off-Campus Credit Courses, Corner Brook, for Memorial University of Newfoundland.
His business experience includes President, Newbury’s Professional Services Limited and President, New-Lee Done Laundromat Limited.
Winston’s volunteering in civic organizations in Corner Brook includes Executive Member, Advisory Committee to the Principal, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College; President, Memorial University of Newfoundland Alumni Association; President, Canadian Cancer Society; Vice-President, Humanities Association of Canada; Executive Member, Newfoundland Association of Public and Private Employees; and Chairman, Big Brothers Steering Committee to establish the local Big Brothers Association. He was nominated Citizen of the Year 1980, City of Corner Brook. From a political perspective, Newbury served as president of a district association for several years, as well as Presidents’ Representative on the Provincial Executive Board of that party for two years.
He is married to Cathy (Riggs) Newbury. They have three children and four grandchildren.
